Middle School Artworks

This week I'd like to highlight the work of the middle school students at Bethlehem.  Our combined class of fifth and sixth graders are working on realism through a project where they are drawing insects.  Each bug selected had to incorporate pattern and symmetry.  Students created these images with color, and they included highlights and shadows to increase the realism.

Seventh and Eighth grade students are learning to apply a limited color palette with oil pastel to their works, based on the art of Wayne Thiebaud.

Congratulations Art Students

What a week for our Bethlehem students!  Besides having a good week during school hours, our students displayed their talents at the annual Music and Art Extravaganza!  At the end of the concert, I awarded students certificates and prizes for placing in the 32nd Annual Saginaw County Art Exhibit, on display last week at Fashion Square Mall.

Best of Elementary
   - Will Conrad, Second Grade
   - Mira Laux, Third Grade

Best of Middle School
   - Lydia Schneider, Seventh Grade
   - Rachel Piechotte, Eighth Grade

Best of School
   - Jada Parks, Seventh Grade

Here are some images of things happening in the art room.

Kindergarten students created an artwork called Wave Goodbye to Kindergarten.  We used our fingerprints to "paint" a negative image of a waving hand.

Second Grade students worked on warm and cool colored sun and moon images.  They also incorporated pattern into their works.

Third and Fourth graders made a design-based project for spring.  They filled a page with decorative flowers, then used white tempera paint to add highlighted areas.

Also in honor of spring, Fifth and Sixth grade students have insects as their subject matter.  In this assignment, they are practicing their observational skills and using a photographic reference to create a realistic drawing.

More from the Art Room

As April continues to fly past, students in the Art Room continue to explore the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in their units.  Here's what took place this week.

Kindergarten students learned about geometric and organic shapes.  They used cut paper to create colorful abstract works.

First Graders talked about color, light and shadow.  Here are some images of the process to create Shadow Snails from oil pastels.

Fifth and Sixth grade students are learning about the work of Pablo Picasso.  In addition, they are exploring color theory and shading techniques.

Eighth grade students continue to work on their Confirmation banners.  These will be completed by the end of the month.  Students will share the banners during the Witness Service the evening of Friday, May 3.

Additionally, some students decorated the room for Easter and spring!
